The move came after a Sydney man, who tested positive for coronavirus, travelled to Byron Bay at the end of July.

According to Byron Shire Mayor Michael Lyon, the man was inspecting property in the area, but didn't check in with QR codes.

While Greater Sydney has been in lockdown since June 26, people are granted exemptions if they are travelling to 'inspect a potential new place of residence'.

'All I'm prepared to say about our traveller to Byron is the police are looking extremely closely at what he was doing in that area,' NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard told media on Tuesday.

Mr Hazzard was also asked if exemptions around real estate needed to be tightened after NSW recorded an additional 356 COVID cases on Tuesday.

'What worries me is no matter what legal orders or requirements are in place, you can't legislate against stupidity, arrogance and entitlement,' he said.
